Roosevelt Life in Poetry

Roosevelt High School has an impressive literary tradition. From our outstanding Poet’s Committee to the huge turnouts at Open Mics, Roosevelt students work to capture the confusing, tumultuous, and hopeful essence of teenage life. In this series, based on Ted Kooser’s American Life in Poetry, we will feature both well known poets and our very own student work. If you have poetry you would like to submit, email it to admin@therooseveltnews.org.

Our first poem features Robert Frost’s short and simple poem that is inscribed on Roosevelt’s front steps.

Nothing Gold Can Stay, by Robert Frost

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.
