Song of the Month: King of the World by First Aid Kit

Oona Murphy

The bright trumpets combined with brisk percussion and crooning vocals give First Aid Kit’s song, King of the World, a strange and uplifting quality that is worth listening to. The song reflects the folksy sound backed by big band instruments that the duo is known for. What makes King of the World stand out is the deep sense of joy and nostalgia that the song evokes. Created in collaboration with the lead singer of the band Bright Eyes, the third verse features lyrics written and sung by Conor Oberst. King of the World is the perfect pick up after a bad day.

First Aid Kit is comprised of two Swedish sisters, Johanna and Klara who perform mostly folk music and covers of popular folk songs. Their similar voices make for interesting harmonies in the songs they play. Their musical talent and performing of cover songs has prompted famous bands like Fleet Foxes and Bright Eyes to take notice and perform alongside the sisters. Their latest album, The Lion’s Roar was released in early 2012 and shows promise for the future creative endeavors of the duo.

First Aid Kit’s music will appeal to those who like the Dirty Projectors, Bright Eyes, and Dark Dark Dark.
