Sunday Sports Special 12/14-12/20

It may be the coldest time of the year, but Roosevelt’s winter teams are on fire! Read how they’re doing here!

Boys’ Basketball

Joey Rasmusson

It was a disappointing week for Roosevelt boy’s Basketball with two losses. The first was against Eastside Catholic, with a score of 57-69, and the second against Cleveland High School, a home game, with a score of 45-63. Sophomore Finn Festor says, Sadly, we’ve had a few tough losses with teams we could have beat, but each loss has been turned into a great learning experience by [our coach] which will only make our team better.” Junior Varsity suffered a loss against O’Dea with a score of 89-51, and another loss against Eastside Catholic which makes their standing for the season 1-5. However, Festor and the rest of the team feel that “the season can only get better from here”.

Girls’ Basketball

The Roosevelt Girls team continued their winning streak with two strong victories. Their first game, against Eastside Catholic, took place on the 14th. Roosevelt crushed them with a final score of 62-32. “In the second half, we came out in a zone defense and the other team could not break it,” says Junior Serena Toney, “We were communicating really well and got lots of steals and we were really hitting our outside shots.” During the course of the game, senior Lucy Morell scored an astonishing 29 points. Four days later the girls team played their next game, against Cleveland High School, which ended with 53-45. “Cleveland got a little more physical because they were getting frustrated,” recalls Toney, “Because of that, we lost our focus a bit in the third quarter, but our effort was still at 110%.” Roosevelt’s next game will be against Rainier Beach. It will take place at Roosevelt on January 6th.

Wrestling

Roosevelt wrestling enjoyed another excellent week, coming away with another two dual meet wins and strong performances at Nathan Hale’s Barry Knott Classic. On Thursday the 17th, they took on Lakeside and Ingraham over at Ingraham High School. They handily beat Ingraham 66-12 and then preceded to dominate Lakeside 77-0; they were only a point shy of a perfect meet score. The riders then took on the Barry Knott Classic yesterday at Nathan Hale High School. Over the course of the day, there were many great matches from Roosevelt wrestlers, many of whom placed in the top five. Junior Rory Hayashi and senior Nathan Forst took runner-up positions in their weight classes, but senior Matt Dickenson stole the show as he took the championship at 182lbs. Dickenson described his first tournament victory as “unreal”.  “My matches were against Kingco schools [and] it felt good showing Kingco who we were,” Dickenson recalled, demonstrating Roosevelt was still a strong contender even though they haven’t wrestled their old Kingco rivals for two seasons. As break begins, Riders still have practices and competition, their next being the Redmond Dual Tournament this coming Tuesday, the 22nd. After that, they’ll have the Bryan Hill tournament at Eastside Catholic on the 26th, a day after Christmas.
