Sunday Sports Special 3/21-3/27

Spring brings blooming flowers, cute critters, and some hot sports action! Read how the Riders are doing here!

Track & Field

Ira Rose-Kim

It was another exciting week as Roosevelt track got their first chance to put their numbers in the rankings. Senior Dane Rogerson and Junior Mohamud Mohamud won the boys’ 100m and the 200m respectively while sophomore Joanna Synovec took the girls’ 200m. For distance, Junior Jack Bylund led the way for a Rider sweep in the 1600m while junior Thomas Hinds took the 800m. Junior Anna Larson took second in the 1600m and senior Flora davis took second in the 3200m. Senior Jack Kulju took wins in the boys’ discus and the shotput while Amy Alverson took second in the girls’ disc. Junior Alvon Brown was the only Rider with a victory in the jumps, winning the long jump with 19′ 2.5″. After their first dual meet, many Roosevelt athletes found themselves in the Metro rankings. The season’s young, but many Riders are already poised to appear in the postseason competitions.

Boys’ Soccer

Andrew Moore

Roosevelt boys’ soccer had another exciting week, but many players felt it could have been better. Their first game of the week was against Ballard. It was a hard fought game but unfortunately the riders came up short, losing 2-1. This was their first loss of the season, but wasn’t a reflection of their full potential because “they were missing some players” and “it really was just an off day”, commented Junior Ryan Duncan. Later in the week, on friday, they got rolling again as they played Nathan Hale. The Riders struck first with a goal from sophomore Alex Lowe, but Hale was quick to respond scoring a goal of their own. In the second half, sophomore Avery Jacobson scored, putting the Riders back on top. They held off the Raiders for the rest of the game with a final score of 2-1. The Riders are looking like a strong contender this year, starting the season with four wins and only one loss. This is reflected in their strong team morale. There’s a shared belief, according to Duncan, that “the team is really strong and [they] are going to have a successful season in Metro as well as a good run at state”

Girls’ Water Polo

Sophia O’Hara

This past week, Roosevelt girls’ water polo fought hard in many games, unfortunately losing all of them. Mercer Island proved to be a particularly challenging rival for Roosevelt. JV lost 7-3 and varsity lost 7-4. For varsity, there were also games against Bellevue and Newport both of which they lost as well. This week proved to be an unlucky one for these Riders, but there is no doubt that they will bounce back in their games to come. This season has just begun and there is much in store so make sure to come out and support the water polo team in some of the games to come. Their next competition is the Rain City Invitational on April 1st.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Sam Wright

This week, the boys’ lacrosse team picked up their first win in two seasons. It came against the Garfield Bulldogs and the final score was marked as 10-2. The team showed great overall team play, led once again by sophomore attack man Aodhan Bower with 4 goals. Sophomore middie Nate Koidahl also picked up 2 goals on the way to this great team victory for the Riders. They also had a game on Thursday, but they couldn’t carry the win streak any further as they fell to the Nathan Hale Raiders 16-6. The point differential would’ve been much greater too if it wasn’t for sophomore goalkeepers Nicky Swedin and Henry Geary holding it down in the crease. The team hopes to look back on what they did right and wrong this past week and continue to improve in preparation for next week’s game against the Lakeside Lions who are sure to be a tough match-up.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Sam Wright

The Roosevelt women’s lacrosse team fared well this past week picking up a 12-8 victory against Overlake and a 15-2 win against Nathan Hale. Senior Emily Cohen is the team’s top scorer with 19 goals on the season (4 against Hale, 3 against Overlake). The team’s second leading scorer is Sarah Woo who doesn’t actually attend Roosevelt, but plays on the team because she attends SAAS which doesn’t have a girls’ lacrosse program. Senior Sophie Reid held it down as goalie and kept the other teams’ point totals small, something the riders hope to do in their upcoming games versus Mercer Island and Holy Names.

Baseball

Anna Galbraith

Baseball had an exciting stretch of games this past week, playing three times in just one week. The team took on Seattle Prep twice, taking a well-earned win at the first game with a score of 7-2. Seniors Zach Nussbaum and Cole Ryseff both hit home runs during the game, making it an exciting match-up. Player Ryota Nishino suffered an ankle injury during the game and is expected to be off the pitch for 3-4 weeks. The second game against Prep was a narrow loss, ending with a score of 3-1. Later in the week, the Riders took on Mariner High School and had a hard fought victory, ending the game 6-3. Varsity will have their hands full next week with four games: Ingraham on Monday, Bishop Blanchet on Tuesday, Franklin Wednesday, and Rainier Beach on Friday, all away games except for Blanchet.

Softball

Erika Atkins

Roosevelt’s varsity softball team broke out of the gate at the jamboree last weekend with 3 wins and no losses. On Thursday last week they almost brought home another win, getting to the international tiebreaker before Chief Sealth hit a ball to deep right field bringing in the run they needed to win. Scoring 7-6 in the bottom of the 8th inning, it was a fairly exciting game. One of the key plays leading to Sealth’s win was made in the bottom of the 6th with 3 errors in one. When sophomore Sarah Quamma was asked about the play, she said, “That was a practice game and didn’t count on our record. No further comment.” Although disappointed, the team has a game with Cleveland that they’re ready to jump all over this coming Thursday at Lower Woodland.

Tennis

Jonathan Kent

The Roosevelt tennis team began the week with an away match against Bainbridge Island High School on Tuesday. After playing out five matches, rain put the match to a temporary stop. With a break in the weather, a sixth match was played. The Roughriders lost the first six matches, rendering Roosevelt unable to come back for a victory. Bainbridge forfeited the remaining five matches to put play to an early end. On Thursday Roosevelt played another away match against Lakeside. With a winning record early in the season, Lakeside proved to be the second strong opponent of the week. Although some matches were close, including boys doubles with seniors Gideon Manahan and Matt Nicholson who lost with a tie break after two sets, Roosevelt lost 0 to 11. “It was a tough match. The score doesn’t really reflect the effort put in,” commented sophomore Lila Stocking. After a week against two of Metro League’s best teams, Roosevelt hopes to add more wins to its currently 1-3 record. The tennis team’s only match scheduled for next week is their fourth consecutive away match against Garfield High School.
