The 2023-2024 golf team has had a season of success on both the boys and girls teams. The boys team finished the season undefeated, while the girls finished with only one loss, against Lakeside. Both the boys and girls’ teams won Metro Championships.

Will Sires ’24, a captain of the boys team, has been playing golf for around 12 years and was the Metro Champion and placed second in District Championships. He said what helped him with his success was “being competitive with my teammates every day.” Sires added that the team was “a lot of fun and a lot of competition.”

Mia Cluff ‘24 and Lauren Lee ’24 are both captains on the girls team and they said the main thing they enjoyed about the team was how close everyone was. Cluff said, “I know that other high schools, their team is not as close as ours is, especially with the guys and girls. So I feel like that’s what made golf really fun for everyone.” Lee also said, “getting dinner with the team is always a highlight of the week.”

Another member of the boys team, Callum Buchanan ’24, said that what helps make everyone better is, “We push each other to do better.” He explained that while one wants their teammates to succeed, one also wants to beat them, continuing, “There’s a bit of friendly competition, like we all push ourselves to play to the best standards.”

Quinn Burwell ’26 has improved his golf game since last year and said, “the team environment pushed me to do so.” He said that the success of the team is credited to “our coach and the environment the team creates.”
The team said that their coach, science teacher Christopher Rose, plays an essential role in their success. Lee said, “He’s been such a big supporter.” Cluff added, “I feel like he really helped bring both the girls and guys team together. So we’re all really close … being really close as a team kind of helped us throughout the season.”
The boys moved on to State Championships which will take place in May. The regular season has ended but they are still practicing during the off season in preparation for State. The girls District Championships also will take place in the spring.
