The Pressure of Promposals

As prom reaches to an end, the stress around coming up with a perfect promposal is finally over, at least for another year. With the hype around promposals, prom season can start to feel like one big competition. You can’t just ask each other to prom anymore, that’s unheard of in today’s world. Now a days it’s all about the proposals, elaborate stunts and other creative ways in which high schoolers ask each other to prom. This could include anything from a pizza spelling out “prom?” in pepperonis, all the way to skywriting planes and serenading. Teens are spending hundreds of dollars on these proposals, taking this cute trend to a whole new level.

Although the first ever promposal is unknown, the word itself was used for the first time by a Dallas newspaper in 2001. At the time, students were asking each other to prom using the school’s loudspeaker. Another early promposal recorded was from a boy who left rose petals at his date’s house in 2002.

The hype we see over these proposals in today’s day and age takes away all the fun by putting pressure on both sides. It may seem as if the one in charge of the proposal would be under the most pressure, but it’s not easy being the person on the receiving end either. I mean, how does one simply say “no” to someone who went all out to give them a perfect promposal. Imagine, someone you have absolutely no interest in, holding a giant sign with some awful pun and a big bouquet of flowers, as everyone you know stands around and watches. You can’t say no without looking like an awful person, and totally embarrassing the both of you. But the obsession over promposals completely disregards this possibility, leaving you forced to keep your mouth shut and be nice when that certain someone asks you to prom. And for the rest of your life you’ll be reminded of that as soon as one of your grand kids asks you why you look so miserable in your prom photos.

So be smart, and don’t fall for the pressure of “promposals.” And if you, at least be confident that the person your asking is somewhat interested in you.
