Tami Brewer visits Roosevelt High School

Following Principal HkwauaQueJol Hollins’ separation from RHS last February, on May 9 SPS Superintendent Brent Jones announced the appointment of Ingraham Vice Principal Tami Brewer as Roosevelt’s new Principal.

Brewer will officially begin at RHS on July 1. She began working for SPS as a teacher at Ingraham in 1994, and was hired as Assistant Principal in 2017.

Brewer says that she accepted the Roosevelt position because she “really fell in love with the idea of leading a high school and being engaged in all the pieces of what it takes to create a positive and a really fantastic school community and high school experience.”

A wave of new administrative appointments in SPS has created a period of transition not just for Roosevelt, but for the entire district.

During the month of May, there were student protests over the departure of Cleveland High School’s Principal. Ballard High School, Franklin High School, and various middle schools also found themselves searching for new leadership.

Brewer recognizes the challenging times the district and the Roosevelt community are facing, but states, “I stay the course. I’m not a person that will abandon when things get hard.”

Brewer hopes to create a school environment focused on people. She is most excited about getting to know the community and emphasizes that for her, “people are number one,” and come “first and foremost.”

In regard to the coming school year, Brewer says, “I believe in collaborative leadership. I believe in transparent leadership. I believe in service leadership.” She also spoke to the necessity for adaptability in this new role, noting that as principal, “You’re putting on lots of different hats for different needs.”
In anticipation of next year and the details of her new role, Brewer says, “I definitely have humility, lots of humility on that because that takes quite a bit for a person to download and to get organized.” She would like students to know that she hopes, “to prove myself to students, that I’m here to listen to you and I want to be safe for them to come.”
