Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving. A time for family. A time for good food. A time to relax and take a break from our busy lives. Or maybe a time for a turkey throwing contest – with fire.

Every year, the majority of Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. This day is traditionally filled with turkey, pumpkin pie and football. But, not every family is the same and traditions, many not of the average American is seen in this national holiday every year.

In New York, a World Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest is held every year, and in 2017 the winner consumed 47 pieces of pie in only 10 minutes. Those pies sure got squashed!

In Indianapolis, Indiana people compete to prove their fire turkey flinging prowess. Flying through the air and flames flying through the wind, these frozen turkeys sure bring the heat.

In Newport Beach, California, the hallways of stores are turned into bowling lanes on Thanksgiving day, and turkey upon frozen turkey is tossed down the runway.

Yet, to fully enjoy the festivities of friends and family, one doesn’t need to test their stomach capacity or perfect their throwing skills. A good plate of stuffing and sweet potatoes is really all you need.

My family always makes the traditional turkey-mashed potatoes setup, but we also love to throw in some spring rolls, fried rice, and noodles. Thanksgiving is not just a holiday to recognize the settlement of the U.S.A., it’s being grateful and celebrating family, any family, through food and time together.

On Thanksgiving, don’t worry about going over the top. Lay back, relax, enjoy some good food, football, and watch those giant balloons fly during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – it’s bound to make your day soar.
